Pinoy Reading Buddies, Inc aims to get Filipino children to collaborate with their peers and to effectively communicate their ideas about their environment and community. Students should aspire to use their education to improve their communities and eventually, change their world!
Pinoy Reading Buddies (PRB) collaborates with teachers to develop teaching methodologies that turn students into change agents in their communities, using literacy and science as effective problem-solving tools. We offer strategies to teach reading and writing where students are engaged and are creative participants, instead of just listening passively or waiting quietly in the classroom. Traditional public schools in the Philippines may tend to see knowledge as static – a set of formula and standard information that students commit to memory. PRB is out to change this worldview by working with, and supporting teachers who are determined to make a difference in the lives of their students!
Education Philosophy: “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled,” ― said a famous philosopher once. (Plutarch). Teachers should light kids’ fire of curiosity and discovery. Filipino children will learn best when they are meaningfully engaged and their voices are heard.
PRB also sends books to serve as models of good narratives after which the children can pattern their own written and oral storytelling ventures. Every school’s collection of reading materials will eventually be composed of mostly Filipino-authored books (homemade and professionally published), supplemented by a few donated non-Filipino-authored books).
We echo the challenge of the great writer, Toni Morrison: “If there’s a book that you want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it.”
PRB has connected with thousands of teachers over the past few years. We have trained several hundreds thus far in the art of engaging their students. We operate in the areas shown in the map below:
On a daily basis, we get to share tips on effective ways to engage students thru weekly Facebook posts. PRB’s average reach is 40,000-50,000 per week. See sample below:
